Well, this album is an absolute riot and all delivered in sparkling sound quality. The fourth album by The Third is an infectious mix of klezmer, gipsy and Balkan folk music, played by the three members of the Dutch ensemble with real panache and enjoyment. Netherlands-based, the trio improvises, explores and just goes for it, violinist Carel den Hertog, accordionist Coos Lettink and clarinettist Caspar Terra having that wonderful combination of intuition, trust and an easy-going fluidity that only comes from a lengthy collaboration. Recorded for the band's own label almost five years ago in a resonant church acoustic, this isn't all music to get you up on your feet, the trio being just as impressive with the yearning and wistful as it is with the stomping stuff. This is an exuberant, attention-grabbing set, beautifully rendered in DSD sound.
