Headphone reviewing continues to be a rollercoaster ride for me. In fact, this year's highs can be counted on the fingers of one hand: the AKC N90Q, Audio-Technica ATH-A2000Z and Sennheiser HD 800 S. As I've said many times in these pages, it isn't sufficient for a world-class headphone to have a near-neutral tonal balance but neutrality is essential. All three of the aforementioned designs ticked that essential box. So let's focus on one of the headphones I've listed as brightening my 2016, the AKC N90Q. Generally a single headphone wouldn't dominate my recollections of a year but the N90Q [see p80] is no ordinary headphone. I called it a milestone, and that's not an epithet I'm free with.
