Never an album known for its sonic merit, this was a played-to-death LP from its initial release in 1968, thanks to a staggering performance by the lead singer, Janis Joplin. The band itself was no great shakes, and often hit some excruciating bum notes, but Joplin - also one who played free and loose with the concept of singing on key - was so staggeringly intense that this group's take on blues-cum-rock made her a legend. What this 45rpm edition does is open the sound, such that I have never heard the bass playing so clearly, while the epic 'Piece Of My Heart' borders on the transcendent. I fell in love with this album 48 years ago, and hearing it this way was a case of falling in love again. Janis, we salute you.
