My father-in-law insists he could never trust anyone who doesn't like football. I feel the same about the movie Pulp Fiction. That's why, whenever anyone asks me what I've been up to since I stopped editing the NME 16 years ago, I tell them I've been earning my living dealing with Bonnie situations. This immediately accomplishes two things: 1). I can tell by their reaction whether they're au fait with Pulp Fiction or not - which, as I've said, is a pretty good litmus test of whether or not we're going to get along. And 2). It serves to sex up the fact that working in middle management is a pretty lame substitute for my previous career. As, it must be said, most jobs would be.
