Nairn NAP 500 DR

After 15 years at the top of the Nairn amplification tree, the NAP 500 has had a change of role: with the NAP-S1 monoblocks now assuming flagship status as part of the company's Statement amplifier [HFN May '15], it's now become merely the most powerful stereo power amp in the line-up. Its rated 140W/8ohm power output is somewhat overshadowed by the 764W of each Statement monoblock, but then so is the price, as the latest NAP 500 DR, complete with its offboard 500 PS power supply, sells for £19,500, against £98k for a stereo pair of Statement amps. However, what isn't put in the shade is the desirability of the NAP 500, especially in this latest version complete with Nairn's Discrete Regulator technology and the same custom-made '009' output devices used in the Statement [see PM's boxout, p35]. Like the less expensive NAP 300 DR, the two-box NAP 500 DR ships with its own power supply, in this case the 500 PS, containing a 1100VA mains transformer and primary regulation circuitry, the two connected with substantial multicore Burndy leads carrying six 'raw' DC supplies per channel.
