The Music Room

Mr Robertson-Aikman, Managing Director of SME Ltd, decided some years ago that to satisfy his standards of listening quality (particularly for his love of opera and orchestral music) a purpose-built room in part of his home was the only answer [writes Donald Aldous]. Let's look at this room and the equipment he has assembled. It measures 36×211/2×10ft (Iwh), and broadens to 25ft for the staircase on one side. Its internal volume is about 9000ft~3, and the construction is massive, with the basic roof being a single span of reinforced concrete weighing around 50 tons. Throughout the room is a good distribution of absorbing materials in wood and leather, with carpets and curtains containing more than two tons of wool. The central area of the floor is wood blocks on solid concrete covered by thick carpeting.
