You know that it would be untrue, you know that I would be a liar, if I was to say to you that the name Jo-Ann Kelly is ever likely to be writ large in the annals of British popular music. But I know this much is true: without Jo-Ann, or more precisely a stand-in drummer depping with her backing band, we might not now be telling our tale. Ms Kelly was an accomplished blues singer and guitarist who sadly died of a brain tumour aged 46 in 1990. But way back in the winter of 1972 she was holloring her earthy holy roller stuff at a pub called the King's Head in Upper Street, Islington when she was approached by a bright spark called Fred Grainger who was the landlord of a pub just down the road.
