Talk about timing your debut: Santana is one of the bands that enjoyed a breakthrough appearance at Woodstock in August, 1969. They released their first album shortly after that legendary festival, and the combination of a strong cult following, word-of-mouth and this sophisticated debut launched a complete sub-genre, that of Latin-infused jazz-rock. Sheer musicianship, including stunning percussion and the namesake's spectacular guitar work, ensured the success of an album made up primarily of instrumental, while the band's interpretation of the funky 'Evil Ways' gave it a voice. Santana and the follow-up, Abraxas, are deserved audiophile faves. And this is simply the finest edition I've heard.
