Many audio people have probably fantasised about the ultimate multichannel recording - in which all performers are recorded and played back individually - one channel for each, from microphone to loudspeaker. Doing so with a chamber group or vocal quartet would be relatively easy, but the difficulty would increase in proportion to the size of the ensemble to be recorded - an entire symphony orchestra, for example, captured in real time but not en masse as is usually done. The result could be a quantum leap in sonic realism over trying to reproduce a large group with a single pair of loudspeakers, or even with a well-calibrated surround-sound system.
