Homebrew hi-fi and the worth of DIY

I read with great interest the article by Jim Lesurf in the July edition of HFN in which he lamented the decline of building one's own hi-fi equipment. I was surprised, however, that no mention was made of John Linsley- Hood who had many designs for home construction published for both solid- state and valve amplifiers, tuners and tape recorder electronics. The power amplifier I use at the moment is a modified (150W) version of John Linsley-Hood's 75W design published in HFN over four months in the 1970s. I lost count of the number of Powertran kits of this design that I built for friends after they had listened to my DIY version.
