Silver dreamer

Audio, and especially vintage audio, can easily become a collecting hobby. Treasured artefacts, deemed too valuable, too idiosyncratic or too delicate for day-to-day use, are often just stowed away in silence. So hats off to those who not only have a hoard of golden-age pieces, but also know how to enjoy them. One such enthusiast, in some ways an example to us all, was the late Alan Jones. I first met Alan 15 years ago, visiting him to write about his installation in what was then a regular feature called 'System Setup' [HFN Oct '02]. When Alan welcomed me into his listening room, I was amazed. At the bay window end were two Voigt Corner Horns, painted to blend in with the decor. Dating from 1935 and 1938, these had once belonged to the BBC and were now owned by John Howes, of Audiojumble fame, who'd loaned them to Alan.
