It's been four years since we've heard from Deer Tick but their sixth album is finally here and it's, er, two albums. Rhode Island's finest are evidently in full flow but these are not just two albums of the old familiar Deer Tick songs. Vol 1 is the Deer Tick fans know and love, a subtle, underplayed folksy vehicle for the introspective, soul-searching songs of John McCauley. As such it's an excellent piece of work, delicately performed, subtle and well worth the wait. Vol 2 will make perfect sense to anyone who knows that Deer Tick sometimes perform as Deervana, because it's a grungey, distorted rock guitar album, but none the less wonderful for that and, arguably, better suited to McCauley's raspy vocalising.
