One of the bigger changes I've seen in the UK hi-fi scene over the decades has been the gradual fading of interest in DIY and kit-building. OK, safety can be a worry when dealing with electronics, but given how many people confidently use power tools when tackling home improvements, should this really be a show-stopper? Back in the 1960s, DIY was a passion shared by HFN readers and contributors alike. Some readers may recall Heathkit and its colourful catalogues packed with amps and tuners, which could be bought in kit form along with the detailed instructions needed to build them. Then there were loudspeaker companies such as Wharfedale that sold many kits and plans for home construction.
