The Nytech CTA 252 was perhaps the most innovatively styled receiver to appear in the 1970s and '80s. All too often, equipment that came from small manufacturers meant potentially interesting internals encased in uninspiring boxes, as if this casework was chosen as an afterthought. But not the CTA 252. Even today you know that it's something special straight away. First appearing in 1974 as a drop-in module for a series of music centres sold in Scandinavia, the model evolved into a true hi-fi product whose tuner section in particular soon became regarded as one of the best in the business. Complete CTA 252 receivers appeared on the UK market in 1975, but Nytech's own music centre, the Carrard-based 1252 of 1977, was not a big success. The CTA 252 on its own, however, was an instant hit whose appeal only grew as the company tweaked the design to move it upmarket.
