Starting as a strictly hobbyist activity after World War Ⅱ, hi-fi began to boom after the introduction of stereo at the end of the 1950s. And tonearms were then developed that actually gave a stereo cartridge a chance of working properly. Arguably the first and greatest of these was the original SME. The story has often been told, but as the SME 3009 has now reached its diamond jubilee, it's a good opportunity to hear it again.
