Japanese society and culture are often described as hierarchical - even the country's language has different tiers of honorific speech - so perhaps it's no surprise that Japanese product ranges are often similarly delineated. For example, inexpensive hi-fi separates are made not to look cheap, while the mid-range stuff is often festooned with gadgets and/or technology to make it appear more expensive than it actually is.
