Closed-box versus reflex

A quote in Keith Howard's review of the ELAC Adante AS-61 loudspeaker [HFN Feb '18] caught my eye: 'surely not a closed-box speaker in this day and age?'. In 40 years of listening to hi-fi I have never heard a reflex-box that sounded quite right. True, they can be superficially impressive with some types of electronic music, but live music with acoustic instruments doesn't sound like that.
