The perils of buying a 'Smart' TV are now well known. Apps (such as YouTube and iPlayer) that are baked into the set become useless if the manufacturer does not support continual updating. I have a once-clever Samsung Smart TV that is now entirely dumb and stupid. It can no longer even access the information needed to tune into Freesat satellite TV and radio channels when interference from French digital terrestrial stations wafts across the English Channel and swamps the Brit frequencies used by the powerful Isle of Wight transmitters. Things may be different with Android TVs, but only if the set can support future Android updates. The safer bet remains a set-top box or games console (YouView, Freeview, Freesat, Xbox, PlayStation or NVidia Shield) connected to any old TV using an HDMI cable. At worst, at least the set-top box can be replaced.
