It's a hard life, being a small standmount speaker like the £500 DALI Opticon 1. In the breed's favour, by virtue of size, there is only a limited amount of woodwork to cause trouble. Cabinets bring about so many problems in larger loudspeakers, because big wooden boxes are harder to keep quiet, as they tend to resonate in time (and out of time) with the music, colouring the sound. Being of diminutive dimensions like the dinky DALI here-261×152×231mm (hwd)-instantly gives you a head start over any flaccid-framed budget floorstander. Even though you invariably have less bass, what there is, is easier to control. The downside is that this type of transducer is a prisoner of its small size. With an internal volume of just five litres, bass typically rolls off a lot earlier than it might with a larger box, or causes the speaker's sensitivity figures to fall off a cliff. Here sensitivity is quoted at 86dB -middling by modern speaker standards but still generous for an enclosure of this size.
