It's a year since I predicted big things for voice control [HFN Dec '17], because systems like Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana and Apple Siri don't need expensive computing power in home equipment. They work with the 'cloud' (actually a 'farm' of mega-powerful computers in a secure building somewhere). And the cloud continually learns from experience. Over the year more and more hi-fi gear has adopted voice control. I also predicted that there would be concerns over privacy because the voice control system has to be always listening to what we say so that it can recognise a 'wake-up' word, such as 'Alexa', before it responds to a command like 'play me Beethoven's Fifth'.
