Notre Dame witnesses the marriage of CHP and GSHP

The project, which was designed by Glasgow City Council's Development and Regeneration Services (DRS) team, has been widely praised for delivering impressive running cost and carbon savings, but also for coming up with a model that demonstrates how ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) can work together. Both are highly effective carbon saving technologies in their own right, but are not always comfortable bed-fellows because they each need sizeable heat demand to operate at their best. The HVR Awards judges were impressed by the way the project team harnessed both technologies in a way that was suited to the particular characteristics of the school buildings. A year's worth of operating data was also provided to back up performance and carbon saving claims, thanks to the way the system has been monitored since it was handed over to the end users. "By solving two problems at once - getting the best out of GSHP technology and marrying it successfully with CHP - Glasgow City Council has created a design model for the rest of the industry to follow," said David Shaw, business development manager for Baxi-SenerTec UK, whose CHP technology is at the heart of the project.
