Efficacy of spironolactone therapy in patients with heart failure with normal ejection fraction

To the Editor: We read with interest, the featured editorial by Yip et al on heart failure with normal ejection fraction (HENEF). His comments on current studies of spironolactone in HENEF are encouraging since results with ACE inhibitors and AR blockers up to date were surprisingly negative.rnWe have investigated the efficacy of spironolactone therapy in patients with HENEF and the result was published in a domestic journal. We studied 54 patients (29 female and 25 male patients with a mean age of 53 ±9) who were admitted to the cardiology outpatient clinic complaining of dyspnoea on exertion and concluded to have HENEF. Thirty-two patients were assigned to spironolactone therapy 50 mg daily and 22 of the patients were recruited as the control group. Complete M-mode, two-dimensional and tissue Doppler examinations were performed in all individuals.
