The first issue of HSB appeared more than 40 years ago, with membership of what was then the EEC a relatively new situation for the UK. Now, barring a last-minute reversal of the government's insistence that there will be no extension to the Brexit transition period, this will be the last issue of HSB to be published in a UK in which employers' workplace duties are subject to the requirements of EU health and safety Directives by virtue of legal treaties with the EU. In practice, there will be no immediate difference for duty holders after the transition period ends on 31 December 2020, because all EU-derived domestic legislation has been "carried over" so that it continues to apply unchanged from the start of 2021 (HSB 493 p.4).
