Double-decker bus crush highlights need for a safe system for peripatetic repairs

A partner in a coach company has received a suspended prison sentence after an employee was fatally crushed while carrying out repairs to a double decker bus. The incident occurred on 14 June 2017 in Chester Zoo car park while Wayne Lannon was underneath the stationary bus, investigating an adjustment that needed to be made to the brakes, after smoke was seen coming from near the rear offside wheel. Mr Lannon had placed some wooden blocks under the bus, which was supported by a hydraulic bottle jack. The bus rolled backwards off the jack, trapping Mr Lannon.
