HMAS Sydney (II) returns to Alexandria on 20 July 1940 after her victory in the engagement with the Italian cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni. Shortly before she entered harbour, the Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, made a general signal to the Fleet, giving arrival details and adding 'Give her a rousing cheer.' As later described, 'Her own destroyers started it off by hauling out of line in the channel and cheering her as she passed them. Her berth lay at the far end of the harbour, a distance of about two miles from the boom.
