EPA Reports on Progress Made Toward the 2020 RCRA Corrective Action Goal

RCRA Subtitle C provides a system for managing hazardous waste from cradle to grave—that is, from the time it is generated until its ultimate disposal. Facilities that generate, transport, treat, store, or dispose hazardous waste are regulated under RCRA Subtitle C. RCRA protects human health and the environment through 1) preventing future waste-caused environmental problems, and 2) corrective action activities that clean up current environmental problems caused by the mismanagement of waste. RCRA corrective action usually takes place at a facility that treats, stores, or disposes hazardous waste, and can be required to conduct a cleanup through a RCRA order or permit, voluntary agreement, or administrative or judicial action. Additionally, the cleanup can take place while a facility continues operating.
