Prompted by the rising use of carbon fibres in vehicle manufacture, the possible health hazards presented to users of carbon fibres and also to emergency services personnel by the effect of fibres in the lung have been widely discussed in recent years. The paper explains how respirable fibres are formed from carbon fibres, which in the first instance are not respirable, and how they can be determined analytically during exposure measurements. Further problems arising during the analysis of carbon fibres owing to their properties are discussed. The data available at the present time concerning exposure during the industrial application of carbon fibres and the concepts for protective measures that have been established to date are presented. The issue of hazards to emergency services personnel is discussed by a comparison of the anticipated exposure with that for workers in industry. The second part of the publication includes a more detailed description of the state of the art for protective measures and the exposure data obtained in recent years during the manufacture and processing of vehicle body parts produced from carbon-fibre reinforced plastics.
