Up in Flames

An innovative product that helps garment manufacturers to design and construct protective and flame-resistant apparel is Thermo-Man~®, a life-size thermal-burn injury evaluation system. Developed by DuPont and the US Army in the 1970s, the 6-foot 1-inch tall, instrumented mannequin is dressed in garments similar to those worn by workers in electric power and petrochemical operations. The mannequin is engulfed in a propane flash fire of predetermined intensity and duration and an array of heat sensors and a sophisticated computer program are used to predict the location and degree of burn a worker might experience if caught in a similar "real world" situation.
