Resolution Island is located in the Arctic off the southeastern tip of Baffin Island. The United States Air Force built the Cape Warwick Radar Station there in 1953 during the height of the Cold War. They abandoned the station in 1972 and the Canadian government sold the assets to the Northwest Territories in 1976 for three thousand dollars. The federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs (DIAND) became the agency responsible for the cleanup of toxic soil and contaminated marine environments associated with the abandoned base.
