Emphasis on air pollution control has lessened in recent years. Programs such as Ontario's Clean Air Program (CAP) of the early 1990s failed to maintain their focus. But the most competitive companies understand the need to address air emission requirements within the context of existing regulations and permits and with respect to community impacts. Advances in air pollution abatement technology, however, haven't kept pace with advances in some of the other environmental fields. Available technology can be described in these basic categories: "thermal treatment (such as afterburners and catalytic oxidizers); baghouses and cyclones (for suspended particulate control of large grain-size particles); electrostatic precipita-tors (for removal of small grain-size particulate in high flow gas streams); and, wet scrubbers, which have a broad range of applications.
