At present there are seven yards in China already building or bidding for chemical carrier construction of up to 20,000 dwt, including Chengxi Shipyard, Jiangnan Shipyard, Qingshan Shipyard, Shanghai Edward and Yangzijiang. Jiangyang has lost a contract, while Xingang in Tianjin has also bid for a project. Among the larger class of ships, which will be addressed in a future article, Dalian Shipyard has orders for two 46,000 dwt IMO II ships, Guangzhou Shipyard has 38,000 dwt parcel chemical tankers on order, while Jinling is now building eight 37,500 dwt and four 25,000 dwt chemical carriers. Among the crop of projects coming on line since 1998, there have been two prominent problem cases: the Qingshan stainless steel order ended amicably and another owner was stuck in the unhappy position of being con- tracted at Jiangyang, a rare example of financial breakdown of a Chinese yard.
