Ports The difficulties and dangers of handling IMDG cargoes in a tropical climate were starkly demonstrated by a recent incident in Mumbai. Shirish Nadkarni reports on how the port is responding and the problems it faces. On February 27 this year, an unlabelled container was dropped onto the commercial docks of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT). After a cursory Customs inspection had been done, dock workers, dressed as usual in striped cotton shorts and bare to the waist in the sweltering Mumbai afternoon heat, swarmed around the box and began carrying bags from it to the cargo warehouse.
