We are not quite old enough to remember ourselves, but we learn from the May 1981 issue of HCB that bulk liquids storage activities on the UK's east coast began as long ago as 1929, when the country's major tar distillers and chemical companies set up a small terminal at Immingham for die export of creosote. A second facility sprang up nearby not long after, handling molasses exports (derived from locally produced sugar beet) as well as fuel oil and tar distillates.
