This time last year it seemed chemical tanker market was stuck in a rut. Overcapacity had decimated rates and, in October, Intertanko's managing director Katharina Stanzel went as far as to say the current level of earnings in the tanker market as a whole was unsustainable and jeopardising stability. "The sustainability of the tanker industry is a balancing act between economics, tanker safety, the environment, and the demands of our global society which depends on the safe transportation of liquid energy for its way of life," Stanzel said at Intertanko's annual council meeting in London.
