Architects working in India are pulled, pushed, and sometimes attracted to many conflicting design goals and ways of working. Architecture there is about negotiating and imagining the potential articulation of a rich intellectual, visual, and physical space moving across formality and informality, between oral traditions and cutting-edge technologies, and engaging aspiration for the future as well as the reassertions of the ancient. Can extreme social diversity be addressed and manifest in the designed built environment? Can architects design with divided minds?
