摘要

Airports have never been more central to the life of cities, yet they remain peripheral in most discussions of design and planning. While airports have come to occupy pivotal positions in the economy and geography of the cities they represent, the design disciplines have rarely given them appropriate attention. Modern airports tend to be planned for sites that are physically remote from the urban centers they serve, but as transportation hubs and economic engines they have come to play a central role in shaping metropolitan life, growth, and form. The environmental effects and ecological implications of airport operations have rarely been studied by the design disciplines, yet the impacts of the modern airport continue to expand as commercial air travel increases.
