After meeting in New York in the early 1960s, the artist Arakawa and the poet-philosopher Madeline Gins began a lifelong creative partnership that yielded a singular, interdisciplinary body of work. Arakawa's staggering output of often-monumental paintings integrated diagrams, color, textures, and language to construct conceptual puzzles and provocations that explore the relationship between human perception and cognition. In her experimental prose—most notably, Word Rain or, a Discursive Introduction to the Intimate Philosophical Investigations of G,R,E,T,A, G,A,R,B,0, It Says (1969) and What the President Will Say and Do!! (1984)—Gins threads rigorous philosophical interrogations through mind-bending narratives that challenge the divisions between author and reader.
