Spring was in the air, house sales were beginning to grow, the stock market was starting to rise and both the BRC and the ONS agreed that total retail sales jumped more than 6% over the same period in 2008. Maybe not quite yet.rnFast forward a month into May and the BRC/KPMG Retail Sales Monitor reported total sales up a far less bountiful 0.8%, with like-for-like sales wilting by -0.8%. Food sales continue to rise by more than double the rate of CPI inflation while non-food continues to fall. For the second month in a row ONS agreed fairly closely, confirming the downturn.
