Historical AIS data use for navigational aids

A new technology has been introduced into commercial shipping. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a seaborne technology which transmits as broadcast messages position and identification data in short time cycles. In a typical range of FM transmitters the current ships data are continuously available in VTS centres or other ship's receivers. A replay of all ship's tracks is feasible after recording a representative data stream. Different filters can be used to focus on different types of ships' tracks in selected areas. Habits and typical tenors in ship's routing can be shown. Shore-based safety measures for ship's navigation can be enhanced by AIS-based new information about sailing locations and sailing streams.
