The first SMM Istanbul Exhibition is to be seen as an appreciation of the development of the Turkish shipbuilding industry. The roots of the first shipyard in Turkey leads back to the Otoman Empire in the year 1390 in Gelibolu. The foundations of the stone dry dock of the Istanbul Halic dockyard, which still exists, were laid by Fatih Sultan Mehmet, the Conqueror, in 1455. During the 16th century it developed into the largest shipyard in the world. The private as well as governmental shipyards were allocated all over the country. After the foundation of the Turkish Republic, they were concentrating along the Bosporus and in Halic in Istanbul. Initially only wooden boots were built and at a later stage also steel constructions followed.
