The original 》International Association of Independent Tanker Owners《 was inaugurated in February 1934. Changing demands within the industry led 1970 to the re-organisation and re-naming of the organisation to INTERTANKO, since then it has been the voice of the majority of independent tanker owners. As a professional and respected organisation it is representing the industry in order to provide a reliable, competitive, responsible and safe transport service for the liquid bulk cargoes that keep the world economy going. The purpose of the organisation is to provide a forum for the tanker industry, as well as being a valuable source of information, opinions and guidance for its members and associate members. Its structure of Council, Executive Committee, secretariat, various committees and regional panels, and the strong support that it enjoys from its membership and from the tanker and shipping industries, allow it to contribute authoritatively and proactively, at international, national, regional and local level, on behalf of the tanker community.
