Schiffahrt and the Blue Star Holding, provided insight into the background and objectives of the recent merger. ?We have a fundamentally new kind of organization previously inexistent on both sides,? said Klein. Due to larger units in the now common fleet with 137 ships, it made sense, therefore, to choose a new organizational structure. ?The merger did not focus on any equity issue in the first place, but on the question how to manage ships reasonably so equity problems would not arise at all,? the long-term board member of the Germanischer Lloyd (GL) said. Klein pointed out that investors will benefit from positive cost effects of the merger. For the newly formed Blue Star Holding, however, he envisages further growth. Shipping companies with container ships or bulk carriers of medium to very large capacity and multi-purpose vessels could be added as long as the specific corporate culture allows a merger. Klein refused the idea of rapid growth by small vessels offered by banks as a result of the crisis in shipping and stressed the priority of quality before quantity: ?We have a clear quality label in terms of reliability and reducing unplanned offhire times for our ships,? he said.
