We assigned all vessels between 3,000 and 3,999 TEU nominal to the segment narrow beam I. This segment concerns the smaller version of those formerly called panamax vessels. As their bigger sisters, those vessels also have a maximum breadth of 32.2 m, though their length over all (LOA) is significantly shorter than that of vessels of the segment narrow beam II. A couple of years ago these vessels were employed on the main haul trades between Asia and Europe. However, nowadays this ship type has been displaced and operates as an interregional or sometimes even regional feeder around the globe, often in Africa-, America- or Asia-related trades. In 2016 about 266 vessels of this kind were afloat worldwide.
