Transas Hamburg received an order from Alpha Ship GmbH to develop a full scale management system in accordance with ISO 9002 and the ISM Code which should be implemented in the offices ashore as well as on board the ships. Alpha Ship GmbH is a ship management company. They are managing container vessels with capacities between 1,100 and 1,700 TEU. The internal target of Alpha Ship GmbH right from the beginning was to work according to the criteria of »lean management and the two safety codes (ISM and ISO). The intelligent use of the existing communication system on the basis of High Speed Data (HSD) was inevitable to achieve this particular goal. Another compelling requirement was the fast access to huge data volumes on the condition of a tight budget. At the same time, the significance of captains and officers on board the ships should be increased in order to minimize personnel and costs ashore. Owners and the ship managing company are convinced that the latter measure would raise the commitment of officers and engineers to support the aims of the shipowning company. Another aim was to give charterers a selective access to all data relevant for them. The time-consuming detour via the office ashore was to be eliminated by means of this. Thus Alpha Ship hoped to cut costs even further and to render a better and faster service to charterers.
