Looking at the weavings I've done over the last eight years, I realize that almost all of them are in plain weave. I even bought a 24-shaft dobby loom six years ago thinking I'd begin to explore complex structures. I've never used more than ten of the shafts, and as I look at the loom now, I see only six assembled. I'm not even sure where the rest of the shaft bars are! It is also true that I have always been attracted to simplicity in art and architecture. I appreciate pieces that include all the necessary elements but nothing extra―the colors in Mark Rothko's paintings, the horizontal pencil lines in Agnes Martin's drawings, a flower's stem in a tea ceremony room, a candle on the floor of a chapel in Chiapas, Mexico.
