Most modern textile designers have the fiber world at our fingertips. Whether its silk from China, cashmere from Tashkent, camel down from Mongolia—its all just a phone call away. Alpaca from the Andes, yak from Nepal, even buffalo from my own back yard—all are available for my hands to spin and weave. As a young weaver, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by exotic fibers and fabrics. Vancouver is a port city, one that while physically situated in the West, has her face turned firmly to the East. That is, of course, the Far East, the mysterious East of Japan, China, and all the exotic places beyond. Vancouver is the place where the Silk Road finally reaches the New World. In the marketplaces, silk saris and pashmina wraps vie with Japanese obis and bolts of Chinese brocade in glowing, glorious colors.
