Horizontal and vertical anisotropy exists in all naturally deposited formations, but horizontal anisotropy is negligible for most of them. In some sedimentary deposits, however, horizontal anisotropy may cause flow to be more dominant along the plane of deposition as compared with the direction perpendicular to the direction of deposition. Horizontal anisotropy depends on sediment deposition rate, depositional environment, and shape, size, and orientation of particles (Quinones-Aponte 1989).
