The new textbook, Effective Groundwater Model Calibration, is a welcome addition to my collection of hydro-geologic books. In my opinion, this book is a valuable reference for ground water scientists who use models. The book represents the knowledge and experience gained over the past 17 years by Mary C. Hill and Claire R. Tiedeman, both scientists with the USGS, in teaching short courses on model calibration, in applying nonlinear regression methods in calibrating ground water models, and in developing computer programs for model calibration. The book is a suitable text for graduate level courses in ground water modeling and is an excellent reference for practicing ground water modelers. It fills a void in available textbooks, as it is the first text to provide a comprehensive discussion of the use of nonlinear regression techniques for model calibration with guidelines for effective model calibration.
