Calif. agency recommends against listing for gray wolf

Conservationists are criticizing a California recommendation to not list the gray wolf as an endangered species in the state. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife told the Fish and Game Commission that scientific evidence supports offering some protections for the predator -- but not listing it as an endangered species. In 2012, conservations filed a petition seeking protections for the animal after an Oregon gray wolf wandered into California for the first time in 90 years. In response to the petition, the wildlife department recommended categorizing the gray wolf as a species of special concern, banning the killing of the Oregon wolf or other wolves, or listing the gray wolf as endangered at a later date.
