Bipartisan senators question Obama admin's ivory ban

Sens. David Vitter (R-La.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) yesterday joined the ranks of lawmakers questioning the scope of a ban on ivory sales with a letter asking the Fish and Wildlife Service to outline its decisionmaking process. FWS Director Dan Ashe issued a director's order in February authorizing a near-complete ban on commercial ivory, following the recommendations of the White House's national policy to combat wildlife trafficking. But opposition to the ban has slowly grown with some lawmakers asserting that it is too broad and will unfairly punish law-abiding citizens (E&E Daily, July 16).
